Hello and welcome to our Ruger Mini conversion page. This page is long but filled with a lot of information about our accuracy conversions. Back in the 90’s when we started, we made it our goal to achieve the most accurate Mini conversions on the planet, bar none. We saw what other companies had to offer and thought to our self’s, we can do better. This didn't go over well with some companies, as you can see in their adverse advertising. We will be up front with you. We are not cheap! If you want a cheap conversion remember you get what you pay for. Do you want a Smith that does a few Mini’s a year with a prefabricated barrel, then installs the barrel and hopes it delivers the accuracy? Or do you want a company that makes the Mini their business and guarantees accuracy?! Cheap is not always better when it comes to accuracy. We know what the Mini’s weaknesses are through trial and error, you can't cut corners when it comes to accuracy! The Mini is well built and is worth every penny you spend with us to upgrade the rifle to match grade accuracy. We will review some comparisons between the popular AR 15 system and the Mini 14® system below.

The Mini 14® rifle system is a close copy of the Grand’s receiver, bolt and trigger group system. I don't have to tell you that it ends there, but they are still very similar. The Mini is a very tough, well built system as it is. It will take all the abuse you can dish out and still be depended on to function when you need it. Here is a quote from General George Patton:"The M1 is the best battle weapon ever developed." The outcome of WW 2 proves this rifle to be battle worthy. That is also why even to this very day our troops in Iraq & Afghanistan prefer the dependability of the M14 which is the M1's predecessor over the AR 15! But you say to yourself, why put $600 plus dollars into a rifle I only paid $500 for. Well below are some good reasons. Not to mention, have you priced a new M14 lately? Yes, it does shoot a 308 Winchester compared to a 223 Remington. But it also weighs more, cost more and doesn't come with an accuracy guarantee unless you pay extra. Don't feel stuck with the 223 caliber either, we do offer other calibers to suit your needs.

MINI 14 & AR15 Comparisons

Mini 14 - No hot gases are dumped into the bolt. So the bolt is not over come by excessive heat! Also there is no carbon to build up and lock up the bolt!

AR15 - Hot gases are dumped into the bolt to say the least and carbon will build up if not regularly cleaned causing a malfunction and or cease to operate condition.

Mini 14 - All steel receiver and case hardened to a thickness of at least .020"

AR15 - 75% aluminum alloy with the critical parts steel

Mini 14 - Open bolt design is a close copy of the M14. The open bolt is very forgiving when it comes to dirt, dust or sand. The rifle clean or dirty just keeps ticking and ticking.

AR 15- Closed bolt design. Just ask our troops about the plastic baggies they need to use to keep the sand from jamming up there rifles.

Mini 14 - Self cleaning gas system no buffer tube to collect moisture or dirt and lock up the buffer system.

AR 15- Must be field stripped to clean trigger compartment, Buffer system, Bolt & carrier and gas tube system.

Mini 14 - compact, versatile, and doesn't take up much space.

AR15 - Large bulky

Mini 14 - Field strips in seconds. Pop the trigger guard and the rifle practically dismantles it self.

AR 15- Definitely slower to disassemble.

Mini 14 - Now here the AR has an advantage over the Mini. Out of the box ACCURACY!

  1. Competitors Bedding: Sloppy and prone to cracking, will breakdown over time. Still relies on trigger guard to hold action in the stock
  2. Accuracy Systems, Inc. Bedding: Clean looking! We use three steel pillars (∗ see above) epoxy into the stock. Then we use three steel screws to bolt the receiver to the stock. Now you can take your receiver out as many times as you like not effecting the bedding and it always remains strong - $90.00.

There are other companies out there that actually call this their heavy barrel. Stay clear you are just asking to be let down. This is one that has been sent to us to replace with our true heavy barrel. This customer's out his $350.00. You will pay more with us but you will be satisfied with what you get back. You pay for what you get.

  1. Competitors "claimed heavy barrel". They give you a discount and take a short cut to do it. Notice that where the gas block goes the barrel is very thin. This is a harmonic weak spot prone to barrel vibration! We do not do this.
  2. Close up of the competitor's thin spot. This other company saves you $85.00 by using your gas block, but it will cost you in accuracy.
  3. Competitor's target crown. Notice that the crown is not sharp and crisp. The barrel also looks like the end of a baseball bat.
  4. Our 11° target crown is sharp and crisp. This is a must for accuracy! The muzzle also looks more like a gun barrel.

1 inch thick chamber

  1. Our chamber is 1" thick for 4". The competitor’s is.900" for 2". Which chamber do you think is more rigid?
  2. This is the thinnest point of our barrel and it is still .750" diameter. No thin spot in this barrel!!

The 6.8mm Remington SPC

The inadequacies of the 5.56mm NATO as a service rifle cartridge are well documented and have inspired many suggestions regarding possible replacements (some on this web site). Apparently someone in the U.S. Special Operations Command also realized the need for a more potent round and initiated work on a new cartridge designed to work in the M16 action.

The new .270 caliber (6.8mm) cartridge is the result of at least a two year cooperative effort between Special Operations, the Army Marksmanship Unit, and Remington. Various calibers from .22 to .30 were tested before settling on a standard .277" diameter bullet, the same bullet diameter made famous in the .270 Winchester

Remington is offering four 6.8mm SPC factory loads, all with 115 grain bullets. These include two target loads, a Core-Lokt Ultra hunting load, and a Metal Case military-type load. No varmint load is included. The four factory loads all have a muzzle velocity (MV) of 2800 fps and a muzzle energy (ME) of 2002 ft. lbs. from a 24" test barrel. At 100 yards the metal case bullet (BC .325) has a remaining velocity of 2523 fps and energy of 1625 ft. lbs. At 200 yards the velocity is 2262 fps and the energy 1307 ft. lbs. And at 300 yards the velocity is 2017 fps and the remaining energy 1039 ft. lbs. These figures are taken from Remington's 2004 catalog.

The trajectory of the metal case bullet looks like this: +1.2" at 50 yards, +2.7" at 100 yards, + 2.8" at 150 yards, +1.4" at 200 yards, -3" at 267 yards, and -6.6" at 300 yards. The maximum point blank range (+/- 3") is thus 267 yards. These figures are computed for a rifle with a telescopic sight mounted 1.5" over the bore. This, just like the Army claimed, is similar to the trajectory of the .308 with a 150 grain bullet.

The lighter weight .277" varmint and hunting bullets will presumably be the most popular choices in the 6.8mm SPC, and the latter are not thick on the ground. Suggested examples include the 90 grain Speer HP varmint bullet, 100 grain Barnes X-Bullet, 115 grain Sierra HPBT, 115 grain Remington Core-Lokt Ultra, and 120 grain Barnes X-Bullet.

Fast to medium burning rifle powders such as RL-7, IMR 4198, IMR 3031, IMR 4895, H4198, H322, H335, and Benchmark are indicated in the 6.8mm SPC. The MAP of the 6.8mm SPC appears to be about 55,000 PSI.

Here is some reloading data from the Hodgdon Powder Company:

Starting Load - 90 grain Speer HP bullet, 26.0 grains of H4198 powder, MV 2810 fps, 47,700 PSI.
Maximum Load - 90 grain Speer HP bullet, 28.6 grains of H4198 powder, MV 3012 fps, 54,000 PSI.

Starting Load - 100 grain Barnes X-Bullet, 27.0 grains of H322 powder, MV 2502 fps, 37,700 PSI.
Maximum Load - 100 grain Barnes X-Bullet, 30.0 grains of H322 powder, MV 2803 fps, 52,300 PSI.

Starting Load - 115 grain Sierra HPBT bullet, 26.0 grains of H322 powder, MV 2421 fps, 43,500 PSI.
Maximum Load - 115 grain Sierra HPBT bullet, 28.2 grains of H322 powder, MV 2608 fps, 53,300 PSI.

These loads were chronographed in a 24" test barrel using Remington cases and Remington 9 1/2 primers.
